First of all they meet the counselor who is there to support adherence to ARV. If they are in need of drugs they are supplied on the spot.
They are then registered in the CD4 program and blood is collected in special test tubes provided by DREAM. The job of collection is finished around 10 am. Afterwards we collect the tubes in carriers provided with racks in order to keep the test tubes standing. Everything is then taken to Nkubu Hospital through our ambulance. There we meet the staff of DREAM/ Matiri who collect our samples and give us report of the tests of the previous week.
The project is running smoothly. DREAM covers our expenses for fuel, purchase of test tubes and reagents, purchase of food supply and drugs for opportunistic infections. I have already sent receipts through Antonio Campanaro.
I take this opportunity to thank the donor very much because after years in which we have started ARVs only on the basis of WHO staging, now we can finally reach the gold standard for treatment initiation and follow up for our patients.
The project is also helping us in keeping the therapy completely free allowing us to have opportunistic infection drugs. The patients already receive free ARVs from the Government of Kenya.
Yours faithfully
Dr. Giuseppe Gaido
