In the last three months we have been
visited by as many representatives of the World Health Organization (W.H.O.),
with the main purpose of strengthening our active surveillance on Poliomyelitis
and Measles.
Even today they have commended our job,
above all in tracing and reporting all cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP),
which we must consider Polio until proven otherwise. They have stressed the
fact that physiotherapists must be very much aware of the case definition of
acute flaccid paralysis because people could reach the physio. department
without passing through a physician.
They have reminded us that there is a major
measles outbreak countrywide. For the measles campaign, they have stressed the
fact that we must reduce the number of the vaccination defaulters: they have
noticed that we had 0% defaulters in January and February, while in March the
defaulters were 10% and in April 19%. I have explained that the data can be
explained simply by the rainy season which has made the roads impassable, above
all from the rural areas. Albeit accepting my explanation, the W.H.O.
supervisor told us to involve the government public health technicians to go to
the villages and to actively trace the defaulters.
It is a bit tough to have always
supervisions either from national or from international bodies, but on the one
hand it helps us improve and on the other hand it makes us feel that we have
become a very important facility on which even W.H.O. can rely.
