Bonface is a very poor and abandoned boy
living in a miserable mud and grass house near Njuthine (9 kilometers from
Chaaria).
He has been referred to us by the American
sponsors of the Njuthine project, because of a very serious jigger’s
infestation all over the body and above all at the feet.
He came to hospital in very poor conditions
of hygiene, with long and shaggy hair.
Bonface also has a cerebral palsy making
him paralyzed at the left side of the body. He has some mental retardation but
can communicate quite well.
The first steps of our action in hospital
have been oriented to hygiene, with robust showering and bathing; we have
thereafter taken care of the long hair and nails, and we have also tried to
make him feed well.
For the main problem of jiggers we started
fist of all with soaking the affected parts in warm water and hypochlorite.
After the long time dedicated to soaking we have been applying vaseline to
moisture the very dry skin.
A week after starting this skin care, we
started the lengthy job of extracting the eggs of the jiggers from the sub
cute. This is the definitive treatment, but, because jiggers are hundreds and
hundreds, it is a procedure which we repeat already for very many days.
Nevertheless we are sure that we will succeed and Bonface will be completely
jigger free.
We have also started physiotherapy with the
aim of improving his posture and walking skills.
As you can see from the photo, now he is
clean and decent.
We are in touch with the American sponsors
in order to try to find a definitive accommodation for Bonface after the
discharge from hospital, in order to avoid that our job may be completely
nullified if he goes back to the previous living conditions
