A 13-year-old girl came to our observation due to right hydronephrosis caused by a stag horn calculus in the pelvis.
The relatives had gone to some other hospital where they could not afford the price of treatment.
Dr Nyaga, the Director of Medical Services in Meru County and good friend of our hospital, has contacted us, asking if Dr Pietro could do the operation of removing the big stone from the pelvis of the right kidney.
The answer of Dr Pietro has been affirmative and the patient has been operated today.
The operation has been performed at 6.30 am by Dr Pietro, Dr Nyaga, Dr Giorgia in our theater in Chaaria.
It was a successful procedure, done for the first time in our hospital.
I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the people who have collaborated: to Makena and Evangeline, our theater nurses; to Mbabu, Federica and Marta, our anesthetists; and last but not least to Bro Giancarlo who has gone to Meru very early in the morning to fetch Dr Nyaga.
Our prices are so low that the family is confused, overwhelmed and grateful; but that is what we are: nobody must be put in the situation of saying that he/she cannot afford a necessary treatment.
On my side, I simply want to repeat my thanksgiving to the doctors and nurses who performed this “first” operation in the history of Chaaria.
Our mission is to serve the people, above all the poor and whoever cannot afford treatment in other facilities: we are there above all for the sick patients who have no money, and we will never deny qualified medical care to anybody on financial grounds. We believe that medicine is a call to serve.
Today we have seen a further milestone and another step forward in the right direction.
I personally thank Dr Nyaga very much for his continuous support, for his kind collaboration, for his trust in us, and for the partnership we have established in serving the less fortunate in our society.
