Carcinoma of the oesophagus

It is unfortunately very common, and often the patients present to hospital very late when there is no room any more for radical surgery.
Often the stricture of the oesophagus is so tight that not only they are unable to feed, but even to drink or to swallow saliva.
Up to now, in order to help those patients to eat and not to die of starvation we had only the possibility of gastrostomy tube: practically we have been inserting a feeding tube directly in the stomach, bypassing the cancer itself. The gastrostomy tube has helped so many people who have not felt the cramps of hunger anymore and have survived sometimes up to a year or more. But with the gastrostomy tube the patient cannot feel the taste of any food; on top of that the gastrostomy tube doesn’t help for scialorrhoea.
Although it is not a new technique, and in other hospitals even in Meru has been performed for long time, today in Chaaria we have inserted a Celestine tube to a patient with carcinoma of the distal oesophagus for the first time.

The operation has been done by Dr Nyaga who is very keen to teach us the procedure, and to allow patients to be operated in Chaaria where the prices are very affordable.
With the Celestine tube the patient will be able to eat by mouth, will not suffer starvation and will be able to swallow his saliva.
We are very grateful to Dr Nyaga for this new step in our surgical growth and for the new possibility offered to many patients.
Of course it is still a palliative operation but the quality of living it offers is much better than the one offered by the gastrostomy.
The only real problem is the price of the Celestine tube, which is very high.
