Cottolengo Mission
Hospital runs a house for care and protection of mentally and physically
disabled males. It is a kind of hospice where we welcome people with different
degrees of mental and physical challenge.
The centre for the
disables is organized as a home, and not as a hospital ward: the people
admitted there many times are completely abandoned and we take care of them up
to when they die. For few of them we are able to keep in touch with the
families and we try to encourage them not to disappear: we send the disables
home for holidays and we organize visiting days for the relatives.
The centre offer full
board accommodation, but also a physiotherapy, an occupational activity and a
special school. When possible we organize also outings and occasions of
enjoyment for the inmates.
In case the guests of the
centre (we call them “good sons”) have some minor sickness, I am the one called
for treatment. In case of major disease, the inmates are normally taken to the
ward in hospital.
