Fractures of the proximal femour. The poor patients and our new frontiers

It is one of the most difficult challenges for us here in Chaaria.

Up to very recently we could do absolutely nothing, surgically speaking, apart from the old method of traction, which in itself has many complications (bed sores, DVT) and is not very effective.
But slowly we have been growing with the continuous support of Dr Luciano Cara and his group from Sardina (Italy).
Now we have dynamic cannulated screws for the pertrochanteric fractures and for the fractures of the neck of femour when they are not dislocated and we do not fear head of femour necrosis; we have an effective traction system for the operation bed in theater; very
importantly, we can do intra-operative radiographic controls through the fluoroscope.
In these days, Dr Luciano is training us on the use of angle plates for fractures of the proximal femour, just below the trochanter.

We have already operated 3 patients in the last few days and we are moved by the fact that they have been operated timely, soon after admission, while before they had spent more than 2 months in another hospital where they had been on traction and they had never been
operated due to lack of funds.
As usual the angle plates are free for our patients: we have therefore helped 3 old ladies to be soon standing again, and tomorrow we will put another angle plate for another poor man who had been unable to buy the implant for the previous 1 month.
Today the staff was in theater to prepare a patient and set the operation field at 6.30 am.
The operation went very well. We were able to obtain a good traction and to internally fix the difficult fracture with 2 cannulated screws,
which were perfectly in position at the radiological control.
We are very happy for our patients, who are now free from traction, have no plaster and soon will ambulate again.
