Four months in Chaaria

Ania and Michal have today left Chaaria to spend a day in Nairobi before flying back to Poland, after a long time of service in Chaaria.

They have continued the nice tradition of the Polish volunteers of staying with us for long periods of time: actually four months are long enough to become used to our environment, to collaborate positively with our staff, to understand our way of working and to be really useful for the hospital.
Ania has been allocated as a doctor in the female medical ward and in maternity: I know she would like to become a gynecologist and I am sure that our staff members have been very good at teaching her a lot.
Michal has more interest in cardiology and he has concentrated more on the medical ward, where he has been practicing mainly in the male side. He has also collaborated in surgical procedures, above all for the traditional circumcisions.
They have been very faithful to our Thursday classes and I believe they have gained a lot of experience in Chaaria.


We wish them all the best for their future endeavors, for their dreams and careers, for their life together as a married couple.
We hope they will be good ambassadors of Chaaria back in Poland.

Chaaria è un sogno da realizzare giorno per giorno.

Un luogo in cui vorrei che tutti i poveri e gli ammalati venissero accolti e curati.

Vorrei poter fare di più per questa gente, che non ha nulla e soffre per malattie facilmente curabili, se solo ci fossero i mezzi.

Vorrei smetterla di dire “vai altrove, perché non possiamo curarti”.

Anche perché andare altrove, qui, vuol dire aggiungere altra fatica, altro sudore, altro dolore, per uomini, donne e bambini che hanno già camminato per giorni interi.

E poi, andare dove?

Gli ospedali pubblici hanno poche medicine, quelli privati sono troppo costosi.

Ecco perché penso, ostinatamente, che il nostro ospedale sia un segno di speranza per questa gente. Non ci sarà tutto, ma facciamo il possibile. Anzi, l’impossibile.

Quello che mi muove, che ci muove, è la carità verso l’altro, verso tutti. Nessuno escluso.

Gesù ci ha detto di essere presenti nel più piccolo e nel più diseredato.

Questo è quello che facciamo, ogni giorno.
